Rwanda offers the same Volcanoes National Park gorilla trekking as its neighbour, wrapped in a noticeably more polished, quieter experience -- Kigali's transformation into one of the region's most liveable capitals, a small handful of high-end lodges rather than a large camp circuit, and a trek that is typically shorter and less strenuous than Bwindi's terrain. It suits travellers who want the same headline wildlife encounter with fewer logistics and a more boutique feel around it.
As in Uganda, trekking permits are available year-round, but the drier months (roughly June to September and December to February) make for the most comfortable trekking conditions. Rwanda's compact size means even a short trip can pair gorilla trekking with a day or two in Akagera National Park or on Lake Kivu.
