Lamu

Lamu is unlike anywhere else in Africa. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2001, Lamu town is the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement on the East African coast — a living, breathing 14th-century port city where the call to prayer echoes through narrow stone alleyways, donkeys are the primary mode of transport, and the architecture of Oman, Persia, India, and Africa has fused over centuries into something architecturally singular on the continent.

The Lamu Archipelago — encompassing Lamu Island, Manda Island, Pate Island, and the remote Kiunga marine reserve — is Kenya's most culturally and historically rich coastal destination. The islands are connected by traditional wooden dhows, and daily life moves at a pace defined by tides and trade winds. Lamu has no private cars — the narrow streets of the Old Town were never designed for them.

The annual Lamu Dhow Festival in November celebrates the archipelago's extraordinary maritime heritage — dhow racing, taarab music, Swahili poetry, and traditional crafts. Year-round, Shela Beach — a spectacular two-kilometre curve of white sand accessible by dhow — offers some of Kenya's most beautiful beach time.

Lamu is most naturally reached by light aircraft from Nairobi or Mombasa.
