Lake Naivasha

Lake Naivasha is Kenya's only freshwater Rift Valley lake and one of the country's most rewarding and versatile safari destinations, easily reached in under two hours from Nairobi, yet feeling a world away from the city. Sitting at 1,884 metres above sea level and fringed by fever trees, yellow-barked acacias, and papyrus reeds, Naivasha is a place of remarkable natural beauty and surprising ecological richness.

The lake itself is a haven for over 400 species of birds. African fish eagles patrol the papyrus margins, kingfishers dart across the surface, and flocks of pelicans, cormorants, herons, and egrets crowd the shallows. Hippos snort in the shallows at dusk and lumber across lawns at night. Giraffe, zebra, waterbuck, and buffalo wander freely through lodge gardens after dark.

Hell's Gate National Park, Kenya's most unique park, allows cycling and walking directly among wildlife through dramatic volcanic gorges and geothermal features. Crescent Island, accessible only by boat, offers an extraordinary walking safari in the company of giraffe, zebra, and antelope without fences or vehicles.

Lake Naivasha has emerged as one of Kenya's most sought-after luxury short-break destinations, most often combined with the Masai Mara or Lake Nakuru on circuit safaris.
